I would like to draw your attention to our newly announced desktop platform Dekoh at http://www.dekoh.com. The focus of Dekoh has been the same as the topic of this blog.

Growing personal media and other digital information 'bytes' is a problem each of us are facing. After all how much can we upload? Our desktop/local content is still left cluttered, unorganized, unfindable, etc.

We thought, the best approach would be to help the user, fundamentally organize his/her stuff better on the desktop. This would be the first step. Then facilitate sharing, storing, etc. Storing here will be providing ways to upload to storage sites, manage content there, keeping things synchronized, etc.

We will bringing out a suite of personal media applications that will demostrate some of this. Hope to gather user inputs, expert advice, that will guide us through, in evolving a product that solves the 'overly informationed'.

It really just needs to be tied together

There's the trick. Years ago, before Ajax and user-generated content was "the next generation" of the web, there was lots of talk about the semantic web. The semantic web finally seems to be inching closer to reality though. And I think once we get over the hype of all these web 2.0 services, people are going to really start to look for ways to tie it all together.

Once we have the technical means to tie it together, then comes the hard part -- making it easy and natural to do so. Take RSS for example. It's been around for a while, but it's only now becoming relatively easy to subscribe to feeds.

Looking at the mess of services that are available in the last year or so to 'centralize' your life, you'd think that the next killer app is going to be the ability to have your full desktop on your browser.

This is already possible ... things like EyeOS (http://eyeos.org) are very attractive. Though, a little feature light to really do anything at the moment.

But, if you can get all the complexity of something like Haystack and make it available from whatever device I sit in front of - I think that will be powerful. (regressing back to dumb terminals ... ?)

But, it's almost to this point anyway. I have my email at gmail. I have my photos online. My calendar. It really just needs to be tied together.

Obviously, it's not so simple. But, I'm interested to see where these type of projects go in the next year or two.
