Data collection for my study is 100% done! Time for an Oatmeal Stout.
Could visualization help make better software? What if we could actually smell Code Smells? http://tr.im/2fk0
"Unix and C are the ultimate computer viruses." I feel the need to re-read "Worse is Better" at least once per year. http://tr.im/2ekw
From experience, I can say that conducting a formal study in academia is 1% inspiration, 39% perspiration, and 60% administration.
75 people in line at the lcbo. Must be beer o'clock.
Is it just me, or is Ctrl-PgUp/Ctrl-Pg-Down in Firefox mapped *backwards*? My instinct is that up <=> right
Got a new cat's tongue TrackPoint cap (http://tr.im/2258). Sweet!
Watching Engelbart's Mother of All Demos (http://tr.im/2225) on the 40th anniversary. First demo of the mouse and hypertext!
First blog post in a while: "Sketchbook: Firefox session restore" http://tr.im/1xd7. Blog suicide to publish on Friday night, but whatever.
Just saw @al3x's post on text editors (http://tr.im/1wl8); reminded me of a similar thing I wrote: http://tr.im/1wl0
Randomly started using http://tr.im today. Pretty cool actually...like Feedburner for tweets.
I must be a Luddite, because I think Wikipedia could use a usability upgrade too: http://tr.im/1v2t. Repeat after me: it's not your fault.
"Your message has not been sent. Discard it?" Um, I've typed 3 characters. I think I'll live. http://tr.im/undo_is_better
Python 3k is imminent! Welcome to the future. http://tinyurl.com/python3k
Does the "Open in Google Docs" link *ever* work?
Java/SWT, Python/wxWidgets, C++/Qt, all cross-platform. But I bet I could also write a 3 front-ends in the same time as 1 web app.
Making a plain ol' static page isn't easy either...it's a whole lot harder than Word or Powerpoint. Try explaining that to your grandmother.
Cool...embedding images into code in Mathematica: http://tinyurl.com/58c9cp
Do people really think that web development is easier than making desktop apps? Really?!?
via @harryBR: Nothing says "batch renaming made easy" like a 100 form fields crammed into 850x550 pixels: http://ff.im/-aTpc
Just 'git mv'ed a bunch of large files, and wondering why push is moving so much data.
Added the 20th participant to my study today! Now to sit back and let the data roll in...
Awesome. Windows wants me to restart after "installing" a USB drive. Umm...how bout NO.
Great example of why it's worth using LaTeX, if you or any of your readers care about typography: http://tinyurl.com/5szpmp
Cause like who would ever need to do those things? Niche use cases I tell ya.
Ubuntu is great, until you need to do complicated stuff like connecting your laptop to a projector, or recording audio.
Started my field study today. Should be able to sleep by sometime later this week.
"Less, but better." Great slide show of Dieter Rams' work on Wallpaper: http://tinyurl.com/6abbxt
Watched Helvetica documentary. Left feeling like I don't want to use Helvetica anymore.
Congrats @mozillafirefox, market share crossed 20%. Not "1 in 5 people worldwide" though; 80% of the world is not on the internet.
Obsessing about typography.
Backwards debugging: "What the?!?? How is that possible??? Oh...the bug I fixed this afternoon."
Bank bailouts don't prove the failure of capitalism any more than riot police "prove" the failure of the right to assemble.
By the way, command line debuggers ftw! Automatically dropping to a debugger command line after an unhandled exception == awesome.
Using the Python debugger (pdb); instinctively typing gdb commands that didn't even know I remembered. Been 3 years since I touched gdb.
I hereby coin the phrase "riding the black horse" to refer to a coffee addiction.
Somewhat disturbed at how often I type "pythong" instead of "python". Guess I'm not the only one: http://pythong.org
Calgary is finally getting curbside recycling: http://tinyurl.com/4uoamb. In other news, have you heard of MC Hammer? He's amazing.
Using OpenOffice and just discovered that it has a Clippy-like character. Kill me now.
Playing for the Croation club in the u of t club soccer tournament
Finally got my inbox to empty. Ahhhhh.
Amazing: Booting Linux on the EeePC in five seconds: http://tinyurl.com/3tvwc6. That's faster than my iPod and my phone.
Idea: when I click to play a Flash video that has sound, the OS lowers the volume on the music that's playing in iTunes
TrackPoint inventor (Ted Selker) said tests have shown it's 20% faster than the touchpad. I'd love to see the published results.
Got to meet the inventor of the TrackPoint today. Exciting for me, since it's the only reason I haven't bought a MacBook yet.
Lost in the eaton centre. Boy do i hate malls
@alisaria that's the best way to learn!
New blog post: Google Chrome: Usability Impressions http://tinyurl.com/563ya5
Checking out Google Chrome...first impression is very good. Lots of nice little features in the UI.
Unsure about proper way to greet man who is picking through my garbage
Can't wait to take Google Chrome for a spin.
Sweet. Today is Devo day at Manic Coffee. Gut Feeling is an amazing song
Re: my previous tweet on Firefox bug reports, these are the ones in question: http://tinyurl.com/5uj77a @mozillafirefox #mozilla #firefox
Smalltalk doits + Firefox = Ubiquity: http://tinyurl.com/5lf7n7
Not encouraging: spending an hour writing up a good bug report, and it's not even triaged 2 weeks later. @mozillafirefox #mozilla #firefox
Damn, 3 paragraphs into the GIMP Straight Line Tutorial (http://tinyurl.com/l3e39) and I'm already lost.
Who says the GIMP is hard to use? http://tinyurl.com/l3e39
Writing some Python code and suddenly all is right with the world.
Sorry, Leslieville hipster, acid wash jeans are still hideous.
Can anyone recommend a good Javascript rich text widget? Maybe one that even does syntax highlighting?
I table a motion that Canadian designers start using the National Colour Palette: http://tinyurl.com/5ge6fa
Eating burritos, and people at next table appear to be on a date. Guy just referenced a Family Circus cartoon, ouch.
Seen in store window: Belkin washable mouse. Ewww.
via @waxpancake, just found Code Rush (http://tinyurl.com/3q4fyr), documentary on the Mozilla source code release. Can't wait to watch it.
Dude beside me is obsessively attempting to execute a Super Mario 3 level on his laptop. Must be up to >200 reps by now
On the train from Toronto to Ottawa. VIA Rail could learn a thing or two from Deutsche Bahn, I tell ya.
After coffee cleanup and a couple days of drying, laptop won't boot. I'm accepting wagers...I'll give you 50:1 odds it's the mobo. Crap.
I recommend regular oh-shit-I-just-spilled-coffee-on-my-laptop drills. That way when it actually happens, you don´t freak out like I did.
Love the epic billg rant (http://tinyurl.com/5x4rrt). Best part: "This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up."
I think Office 2007 is purposely engineered to be dog slow, so that when MS launches a web version, it will feel relatively snappy.
Norway weather is weird. It's changed its mind 5 times today about whether it should be sunny or raining.
Just installed Firefox 3. Wondering where my back and forward buttons have gone. I was using those!
Hanging out with Turkish football hooligans in Basel. Hopp Schwiiz!
4 cities in 5 days, but finally taking it a little bit easy in Freiburg. Watched the Germany/Poland game in a crazy packed beer hall.
In Hamburg, stumbling around in a stupor due to lack of sleep.
First day in a long time with no caffeine. It hurts, Reggie!!!
Just got my change jar counted at Dominion: 75 bucks. Score! (you know you're a grad student when)
Have recently been wondering about ways to distribute JS libraries...then I heard about this: http://tinyurl.com/58ywax
Top 10 Nike+ power songs are sooo predictable. C'mon, running 5k on Sundays does not mean you were "Born to Run".
I want a PDF viewer that actually uses all my vertical pixels. Also, when can we stop publishing CS papers for freaking print format?
Google is randomly switching languages on me again. "J'ai de la chance!"
Watching champions league final in a packed Toronto pub. Who says we don't love the game?
Found $430 round-trip ticket from Toronto to Hamburg. Absurdly cheap. Today is going to be a good day methinks.
Next version of the OLPC: http://tinyurl.com/4lyndq. "Hmm, is there any way we could make it *harder* to type on?"
#meshu was solid today. Great talks by @avibryant, @dburka, and @jeresig. The summary, Dubroy-style: http://tinyurl.com/5zazx5
At #mesh08, Avi Bryant just demo'd MagLev...way cool.
Grabbing an espresso, then on my way to meshU
Writing jQuery code feels so much like Lisp: "Error: Missing ) after argument list."
Working on a project that uses Subversion, and missing Git.
A rainy afternoon calls for a double espresso. Mmmm, that's better.
Getting *really* sick of Windows. Would have bought a Macbook, but I love my Thinkpad's trackpoint way too much. Maybe back to Linux?
Favourite new term: "ravioli code" - the OO equivalent of spaghetti code. http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?RavioliCode
Drowning in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. jQuery is my lifeline.
GMail snippets might just be the best argument for top-posting email replies. Archiving an email without opening it == golden.
Javascript dev tools are still in the dark ages. Why is my debugger in the same process as the code I'm debugging? Am I missing something?
If this is Object Calisthenics, I think I’ll stay on the couch: http://tinyurl.com/64z8hr
Immersed in Javascript, and continuously reminding myself that I'm not coding in Python.
What I've been up to: freehand drawing on the OLPC laptop (http://tinyurl.com/5pdls4)
Heading to New Hampshire (live free or die!) for this: http://tinyurl.com/5mvkc6.
Wondering why my Firefox search bar is now going to spanish Google. Voy a tener suerto!
finding new ways to not do work.
